Kashrell Lawrence Signs First Professional Contract In Finland

TORONTO, August 1, 2017 – Slan Sports Management is pleased to announce that Kashrell Lawrence has signed his first professional contract with Kaarina Ura Basket of Finland’s First Division.

Lawrence, a 6’2 forward, is coming off of his fifth and final season at Dalhousie University in the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) conference of U Sports, formerly known as Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). In 25 games with Dalhousie, Lawrence ranked 12th in the AUS in scoring with 15.6 points per game, eighth in rebounding with 6.9 per game, and third in steals with 2.1 per game. He also added 2.1 assists per contest. Dalhousie captured the AUS regular season championship for the second year in a row, won the AUS Tournament for the third consecutive season, and appeared in the U Sports semifinals for the second consecutive year. At the conclusion of the season, Lawrence was named to the U Sports All-Tournament Team, the AUS All-Tournament Team, and the All-AUS First Team. Lawrence was also given the All-AUS Student-Athlete Community Service Award and the U-Sports All-Canadian Ken Shields Award for demonstrating outstanding achievement in basketball, academics, and community involvement.

A Brampton, Ontario native, Lawrence attended high school at Cardinal Leger Secondary School, where he was the perennial MVP and captain, and also attended the Athlete Institute. He joined Dalhousie University for the 2012-2013 season, averaging 7.0 points and 4.2 rebounds as a first year player. He improved his output in his second year, averaging 11.9 points and 5.9 rebounds. In his third year, Lawrence was named to the All-Atlantic First Team, and helped Dalhousie win the AUS Tournament and reach the CIS Final 8 Tournament. That season he ranked fourth in the AUS in scoring with 18.2 points per game, 11th in rebounding with 7.8 per game, and fifth in steals with 1.9 per game. Lawrence also contributed 1.6 assists per game and ranked third in the AUS in field goal percentage, shooting 58.3%. In his fourth year, Lawrence helped Dalhousie capture the AUS regular season championship, win the AUS Tournament, and reach the CIS tournament semifinals. That season, he averaged 15.8 points, 6.2 rebounds and ranked seventh in the AUS in steals, with 1.9 per game.

Lawrence is looking forward to the opportunity to play in Finland and is confident he will be a key contributor right away.

“I’m very excited to start my professional career in Finland,” said Lawrence. “I’m thankful for the support from the Halifax community, the Dalhousie Tigers’ family, and Coach Kristian for giving me the opportunity to play the game I love. I’m hoping I can help Ura win a championship this season.”

Kaarina Ura Basket competed in the Finnish First Division B last season. They finished the regular season ranked third in Division B with a 19-7 record, and qualified for the Division B semifinals, where they were defeated by Kristika Turku in four games.

“I wanted someone unorthodox to play on our frontline: someone too quick for the opposition centers and too strong for the forwards in the Finnish 1st Division A. Kashrell definitely fits that description,” said Ura Head Coach, Kristian Palotie. “But the deciding factor was the phone call I had with Kash. We wanted a player, as Gregg Popovich would say, ‘Has gotten over himself’ and, furthermore, a leader for our young players. Our whole team is born in the 1990s so having an extra leader was an absolute necessity!”
