Akeem Wright Signs One-Year Contract In FIBA Europe Cup And Cyprus

TORONTO, October 18, 2016 – Slan Sports Management is pleased toakeem-wright-setting-up-the-offense-courtesy-of-london-lightening-basketball announce that Akeem Wright has signed a one-year contract with Cytavision Apoel Nicosia in FIBA Europe Cup and the Cyprian Division A.

Wright split the 2015-2016 season between Pyrinto Tampere in the Finnish Korisliiga and the London Lightning in the National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC). He started the season in Pyrinto, averaging 14.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists over 14 games. Wright then moved to Canada, where he was instrumental in the Lightning’s NBLC Finals run, averaging 14.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.9 assists over 48 total games. The Lightning eventually lost to the Halifax Hurricanes in the NBLC Finals and Wright was named a Eurobasket.com All-NBLC Honorable Mention.

A Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native, Wright started his collegiate basketball career at Neosho County Community College before transferring to Kansas State University for his final two seasons. In his final season at Kansas State, Wright averaged 6.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. Since then, he has played 9 seasons professionally in Europe, North America, the Middle East, South America, and New Zealand.

In 2011-2012, Wright was a National Basketball League of Canada All-Star while playing for the Moncton Miracles and the Oshawa Power. In the summer of 2012, he played for the Otago OceanaGold Nuggets in New Zealand’s National Basketball League, where he was 2nd in the league in scoring with 22.4 points per game. Wright then moved to Israel in 2012, where he averaged 21.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.3 steals per game for Maccabi Kiryat Gat. In the summer of 2013, Wright re-joined Otago in New Zealand, again finishing amongst the league leaders with 20.9 points.

In the 2013-2014 season, Wright split time between Club Baloncesto Valladolid in the Spanish Liga Endesa and SK Dnipro Azot Dniprodzerzhynsk in the Ukrainian Superleague. He averaged 7.0 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 0.9 assists per game in Spain before moving to Ukraine.

Wright moved to Sweden for the 2014-2015 season, averaging 16.9 points and 9.1 rebounds for the Sundsvall Dragons, on his way to being named a Eurobasket.com All-Swedish Basketligan 2nd Team All Star.

“I’m excited to be with Apoel, playing in Cyprus and FIBA Europe Cup,” said Wright. “It should be a fun season and I can’t wait to get started.”

Apoel finished the 2015-2016 regular season in third place in the Cyprian Division A and lost in the league finals in the playoffs. This season they will also compete internationally in FIBA Europe Cup. In Stage One, Apoel will compete in Group J with Czech club BK Opava, Lithuanian club BC Siauliai, and a third club who will be named after the qualification round.
